He Family Courtyard was originally constructed during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty (1875–1908), representing one of the better-preserved groups of traditional Qing-era residential architecture in southern Hebei. According to the Fengfeng County Chronicles, the estate was built by the wealthy He family of the region. Over three generations, it served as a vital hub for salt trade and commerce, witnessing the economic prosperity and social transformation of southern Hebei during the late Qing and early Republican periods.
The courtyard faces south with a north-south orientation, covering approximately 3,000 square meters and following a "three-part quadrangle" layout. The main buildings are constructed using brick and wood, featuring a strictly organized, symmetrical design along a central axis. Existing structures include the main hall, east and west wing rooms, gatehouse, screen wall, and remnants of a rear garden. Ornate roof ridge carvings, decorative brickwork on the eaves (chitou) depicting scenes of figures, flowers, birds, auspicious beasts, and particularly the iconic relief sculptures of the Four Auspicious Symbols—Fulu (Fortune), Lushou (Prosperity), Shou (Longevity), and Xi (Happiness)—stand out. Although the under-eave painted decorations have weathered over time, traces of Ming and Qing-style scrollwork and cloud-dragon motifs remain clearly visible.
The courtyard houses several significant cultural relics, including:
Notably, the stele inscribed with the “He Family Precepts” preserved in the eastern wing room offers invaluable physical evidence for studying private moral education in modern Chinese society.
He Family Courtyard is a microcosm of traditional southern Hebei residential architecture and familial culture, reflecting the northern Chinese clan system, ritual spatial organization, and the integration of agriculture with commerce. Its architectural style, decorative arts, and family records collectively form a crucial repository of regional historical memory. Designated a Provincial Cultural Heritage Site of Hebei Province in 2013, it stands as a testament to local heritage.
