📍 Address: Longhu Village, Fuxing District, Handan City, Hebei Province
⏳ Founded: Around 550 AD during the Tianbao era of the Northern Qi Dynasty, over 1,470 years old
Originally named "Longtan Temple," Longhu Temple derives its name from its location beside Long Lake. It is one of the oldest surviving Buddhist temples in southern Hebei. The temple has undergone multiple renovations through the Northern Qi, Sui, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, with the most extensive reconstruction occurring during the Hongzhi era of the Ming Dynasty. Once a central hub of Buddhism in Zhao Commandery, it enjoyed flourishing religious activity and shares a direct cultural lineage with the Buddhist temples of Ye City (modern-day Linzhang County), serving as a witness to the spread and development of Han Chinese Buddhism in northern China.
Longhu Temple serves as a crucial physical testament for studying the dissemination of Buddhism in northern China, the evolution of ancient architectural forms, and folk religious beliefs. Its inscribed steles, stupa foundations, and oral traditions of chanting hold immense historical and artistic value. In 2013, it was listed as a Provincial Cultural Heritage Site of Hebei Province.
🕉️ Longhu Temple—its Zen heart rests within the mountains and waters, a thousand-year-old sanctuary reflecting the passage of time. Stepping inside feels like hearing the distant chimes of the Northern Qi Dynasty echo across centuries, reverberating in the morning mist along the Fuyang River.
