Tongzhen Temple was originally constructed during the Great Zhong Xiangfu period of the Northern Song Dynasty (1008–1016), initially named "Tongzhen Shrine" in honor of Zhang Boting, the ancestral figure of the Southern School of Taoism (known as Ziyang Immortal). The temple underwent major renovations during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, reaching its peak in scale during the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty, when it became one of the prominent centers for Taoist activities in southern China. Tongzhen Temple stands as a crucial testament to the spread of Southern Taoist culture along China’s southeastern coast. Its architectural style, ritual practices, and textual heritage have preserved an unbroken lineage of Taoist tradition since the Song and Yuan periods. The temple regularly hosts events such as the “Ziyang Immortal’s Birthday Ceremony” and “Taoist Music Performances,” both recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage Projects.
