The Zhongwan'an Mao Zedong Memorial Hall is located within Yudu County—the departure site of the Central Red Army’s Long March. It is a thematic memorial hall established to commemorate Comrade Mao Zedong’s repeated visits to the area during the Land Revolution War, when he personally guided revolutionary activities. In 1934, Mao Zedong stayed here and convened mass meetings to plan the construction of the Soviet base areas and strategies against the encirclement campaigns, leaving behind precious historical traces. The memorial hall was originally established in 1976 and underwent comprehensive renovation and exhibition upgrades in 2016. Today, it stands as a provincial-level patriotic education base.
The main building of the memorial hall adopts a classical Chinese timber-frame design with brick-and-wood construction, featuring blue-tiled gabled roofs and a solemn, dignified atmosphere. Covering approximately 1,200 square meters, the structure is built into the hillside, facing south with its back to the north, reflecting traditional Chinese architectural principles. The compound includes a main exhibition hall, a cultural relics display room, a commemorative plaza, and a reconstructed area replicating Mao Zedong’s former residence. Above the main entrance, a stone plaque inscribed with “Zhongwan'an Mao Zedong Memorial Hall” was written by Dong Biwu, former Vice Chairman of the People’s Republic of China.
The museum houses a total of 187 cultural relics, including two first-class national treasures:
The exhibition centers on the theme “A Spark Can Start a Prairie Fire—Faith Remains Unshaken,” presenting through panels with text and images, topographical models, and multimedia interactive displays, a systematic account of Mao Zedong’s revolutionary practice and ideological development in the southern Jiangxi Soviet region.
As an essential component of the departure site of the Central Red Army’s Long March, this memorial hall bears witness to a grand chapter in revolutionary history. It serves as a vital physical testament to the formation and evolution of Mao Zedong Thought. The preserved original documents and historical memories hold immense archival value and enduring spiritual inspiration, earning it a place on the list of China’s Top 100 Red Tourism Destinations.
