🏯 Northern Section of the Xiangtangshan Grottoes

“Hewn from stone into caves, Buddha figures rise like a forest; the spirit of Wei and Qi resounds through the heavens”
——A remarkable relic of the peak era of northern Chinese Buddhist art, a living fossil of Northern Dynasty grotto sculpture

📜 Historical Development

• Construction Period: Carved beginning in the Tianbao era of the Northern Qi Dynasty (550–559 CE), initiated under royal patronage by the Northern Qi imperial family. It stands as one of the most significant royal grotto projects during the Northern Qi Dynasty (550–577 CE).
• Historical Context: Built upon Yecheng (modern-day Linzhang County, Hebei Province) as its political center, the Gao imperial clan of Northern Qi deeply revered Buddhism. Xiangtangshan served as a "palace of Buddha away from the capital," seamlessly integrating political authority, religious faith, and mountain worship.
• Primary Builders: Mainly commissioned by Emperor Wenxuan of Northern Qi, Gao Yang, with his younger brother Gao Jie (governor of Cangzhou, later ennobled as Prince of Rencheng) also playing a key role in oversight. Some caves were slightly modified during the Sui and Tang dynasties, but the overall character remains distinctly Northern Qi.
• Origin of Name: The name "Xiangtang" derives from the striking acoustic phenomenon within the caves—resonant echoes that reverberate like great bells. When walls are tapped or sutras chanted, sound lingers endlessly. Thus, historical texts such as Commentaries on the Rivers and Canals and Records of Gold and Stone consistently refer to the site as "Xiangtangshan."

🏛️ Architecture and Cave Layout

The Northern Section lies on the eastern side of the Xiangtangshan Scenic Area, forming one of the three major grotto clusters alongside the Southern Section (near Changle Temple ruins) and the Central Section (on the slope of Gulishan). However, the Northern Section is the largest, best-preserved, and highest in artistic quality—the core zone of the entire complex:

• Number of Existing Caves: A total of 9 caves, including 4 main caves (Great Buddha Cave, Shakyamuni Cave, Inscribed Scripture Cave, and Two Buddhas Seated Together Cave), with the remainder being smaller subsidiary niches.
• Typical Layout: Combines two innovative forms unique to the Northern Qi Dynasty: stupa-style caves and central pillar caves:
  • ✅ Great Buddha Cave (Cave No. 1): The principal cave of the Northern Section, measuring approximately 12 meters wide and deep, with a height exceeding 10 meters. The ceiling features a bell-shaped stupa finial carved in relief. The four walls are densely adorned with low-relief images of thousands of buddhas and flying apsaras. On the central wall stands a triad of colossal statues (the central figure, the Buddha Shakyamuni, reaching over 3.5 meters tall), whose drapery flows with the dynamic grace described as “Cao’s robes emerging from water”—strong, vigorous, and fluid.
  • ✅ Inscribed Scripture Cave (Cave No. 3): China’s earliest, most systematic, and largest-scale grotto for cliffside Buddhist inscriptions from the Northern Dynasties. The walls and passageway are engraved with seven major Buddhist scriptures, including the Vimalakirti Sutra and the Prajna Paramita Sutra: Chapter on Avalokiteshvara’s Universal Door, totaling nearly ten thousand characters. The script style is the typical transition from clerical to regular script of the Northern Qi period—square, robust, and powerful, earning praise from Kang Youwei as the “crown of Northern steles.”
  • ✅ Two Buddhas Seated Together Cave (Cave No. 5): A rare depiction of the “Dharma Sermon Scene at Mount Gridhrakuta”, featuring two seated buddhas (Shakyamuni and Prabhutaratna) on the central wall, flanked by bodhisattvas with full-bodied forms and intricate jewelry. This exemplifies the pivotal stylistic shift in the Northern Qi era—from the slender, ethereal “thin-boned, refined image” of earlier periods toward fuller, more dignified beauty.
• Architectural Features: The exterior façades mimic wooden architectural elements—including brackets, tile ridges, and eave ends—with clear, detailed carvings. This makes it the only extant stone-based evidence for studying the architectural form of the Northern Qi Dynasty. The guardian figures on either side of the entrance gate have fierce expressions, bulging muscles, and convey intense realism.

🖼️ Cultural Relics and Artistic Value

• Sculptural Artistry:
  • Excels in combining high relief and round sculpture, with bodhisattva figures characterized by broad facial contours, broad shoulders, and lavish chest ornaments—breaking away from the thin, gaunt aesthetic of the Northern Wei period and foreshadowing the plump, graceful style of the Sui and Tang dynasties.
  • Flying apsaras are light and agile, holding musical instruments or scattering flowers, their flowing garments evoking the “wind-swept silk of Wu” style—creating a north-south artistic dialogue with contemporary apsaras from Dunhuang.
• Scripture Inscription Heritage:
  • The inscriptions directly inherit the tradition of the Northern Wei’s Hot Spring Epitaph, while also paving the way for the Fangshan Stone Sutras of the Sui and Tang eras. They serve as tangible proof of Buddhist “end-of-dharma” ideology driving protective religious practices.
  • Many inscriptions include donor dedications from the Wuping era of Northern Qi (570–576 CE), bearing names of prominent aristocratic families such as the Li Clan of Zhaojun and the Gao Clan of Bohai, confirming the extensive network of elite Buddhist devotion during the Northern Qi period.
• Historical Information Carrier:
  • The caves contain 47 inscriptions spanning from the Northern Qi to the Qing dynasty, including travelogues by literati such as Lu Xu of the Tang and Wang Ji of the Jin—forming a layered cultural record stretching over a millennium.

🌟 Cultural Significance and Academic Standing

• Key Milestone in Chinese Grotto History:
  • Alongside Yungang and Longmen, it is recognized as one of the Three Major Grotto Systems of the Northern Dynasties. Yet Xiangtangshan stands out uniquely for its royal grandeur of the Northern Qi, pioneering innovation in scripture carving, and complete preservation of architectural imitation.
• Important Witness to the Sinicization of Buddhism:
  • Cave layouts integrate Indian stupa traditions, Chinese temple architecture, and tomb burial customs. Early narrative imagery begins incorporating localized themes—such as farming scenes and urban life depicted in reliefs.
• Potential Candidate for World Heritage:
  • Listed on China’s Preparatory List for World Heritage Sites (updated in 2021). The National Cultural Heritage Administration affirms its “irreplaceable significance in understanding the political, religious, artistic, and technological history of the Northern Dynasties.”
