📜 Historical Origins: The Core Landmark of Cao Wei’s Ye Capital
The Three Towers were originally constructed in the 15th year of Jian’an under the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 210), serving as the political, military, and cultural center of Ye City built by Cao Cao after unifying northern China. According to historical records such as Shui Jing Zhu, Records of the Three Kingdoms, and the Northern Dynasties’ Yezhong Ji:
- Caoqiao Tower (Copper Sparrow Tower): Located centrally, standing ten zhang high (approximately 23 meters), with over a hundred halls and pavilions. Named for its towering structure reaching the clouds, crowned with a bronze sparrow statue, it served as Cao Cao’s venue for banquets, poetry composition, and naval inspections;
- Jinfeng Tower (originally known as Jinhu Tower): Situated west of Caoqiao Tower, completed in the 18th year of Jian’an (AD 213). Its name derives from the legend of the golden phoenix carrying a scroll, symbolizing auspiciousness. Later expanded during the reign of Shih Hu of the Later Zhao Dynasty, it preserves foundations from the Northern Qi period and Tang dynasty steles;
- Bingjing Tower (Ice Well Tower): Located east of Caoqiao Tower, housing ice cellars, salt storage pits, grain silos, and crossbow mechanisms. It functioned as a multi-purpose facility combining storage, defense, and emergency readiness. Though no above-ground structures remain today, underground rammed earth layers survive.
The three towers spanned the northwest corner of Ye City’s walls in a design of “flying corridors connecting towers, linked by three pathways,” forming a complex defensive system where towers stood atop one another and roads ran beneath—pioneering the integration of high-rise architecture and urban planning in ancient China. This model profoundly influenced the layouts of the Northern Wei capital Luoyang and the palatial complexes of Sui and Tang Chang’an.
🌟 Historical Highlights:
- Birthplace of Jian'an Literature: Cao Pi’s Farewell Ode to the Tower and Cao Zhi’s Ode to the Copper Sparrow Tower were composed here, establishing the enduring reputation of “Jian'an spirit”;
- Political Stage: Cao Cao’s edict “Only Talent Matters” was issued here; during the Five Barbarians and Sixteen Kingdoms period, the Later Zhao, Ran Wei, and Former Yan dynasties all used the three towers as the core of their imperial palaces;
- Cultural Legacy: Poets including Du Mu, Li He, and Wen Tingyun repeatedly praised the site in verse, cementing “Caoqiao Tower” as a classic literary symbol representing cycles of rise and fall across Chinese culture.
🏗️ Current Ruin Status and Architectural Remains
The park adopts an approach of on-site protective display based on archaeological findings. Key surviving remains include:
🔹 Jinfeng Tower Ruins (best preserved)
- Existing Rammed Earth Foundation: 122 meters long north-south, 70 meters wide east-west, with a remaining height of 12 meters, formed through continuous construction from the Eastern Han to the Northern Dynasties;
- Tang Dynasty Stele “Cao Gong Gu Lei” (Cao Cao’s Old Fort): Erected on the eastern side, recarved during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty, inscribed with detailed accounts of the three towers’ origins and history;
- Yuhuang Temple Ruins from the Yuan Dynasty: A Ming-Qing rebuilt gatehouse and subsidiary halls still stand atop the tower, reflecting the transformation of the site from a military fortress into a space of folk religious veneration;
- Excavated Artifacts Exhibition Hall (at base): Displays over a hundred artifacts, including Northern Dynasties roof tiles (lotus and beast face patterns), bronze door knockers, iron arrowheads, and bricks inscribed with the character “Wei.”
🔹 Caoqiao Tower and Bingjing Tower Ruins
- No visible above-ground structures remain, but laser projection and terrain markers clearly indicate the relative positions, scale, and corridor alignments of the three towers;
- Archaeological surveys confirm that Caoqiao Tower’s foundation is approximately 60 meters wide, separated from Jinfeng Tower by about 65 meters, while Bingjing Tower’s foundation measures roughly 45 meters wide—arranged in a “pin” character formation;
- Exposure section of the foundation: Reveals layered strata of Han-era yellow loess and Northern Dynasties gray ceramic fragments, offering a vivid visual record of more than 1,800 years of stratified accumulation.
