📍 Address: No. 123 Xīmén Street (heart of the ancient city district)
Shàn Fó Táng was originally constructed during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty (1522 AD), making it nearly 500 years old. It stands as one of the better-preserved examples of folk Buddhist religious architecture in southern China. According to the Local Annals – Temple and Shrine Section, it was initially known as “Shàn Yuán’ān” (the Temple of Good Connections). Due to its flourishing worship and widespread devotion, it was renamed “Shàn Fó Táng” during the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty, meaning “a temple dedicated to universal salvation through benevolent intentions,” reflecting a harmonious blend of Confucian ethics and Buddhist compassion.
The hall faces south with its main structure oriented north-south, covering approximately 380 square meters. It employs traditional wooden post-and-lintel construction with a three-part courtyard layout: the front pavilion serves as the mountain gate, the central hall is the main sanctuary, and the rear hall houses the Sutra Repository. The roof is covered with blue tiles, featuring upturned eaves and intricate carvings, while the beams and rafters still bear decorative paintings in the characteristic Qing Dynasty style. Inside the main hall, statues of Maitreya Buddha and the Eighteen Arhats are enshrined. Carved from camphor wood, these figures exhibit serene expressions and flowing drapery, showcasing typical late-Qing artistic features from eastern Zhejiang.
Beyond its role as a place of worship, Shàn Fó Táng is a vital spiritual center for the local community. Every year on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month—the Buddha’s Birthday Festival—it hosts traditional vegetarian feasts and chanting ceremonies for blessings, a tradition that continues to this day. Its architectural form, ritual practices, and integration with folk beliefs make it a living example for studying the dynamics of folk religion in southern China.
