The Cizhou Folk Custom Museum is located in the ancient county of Cixian, which was originally a residential complex from the middle and late Qing Dynasty. It is one of the well-preserved traditional courtyard complexes in the Cizhou region. The complex was built during the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty and has withstood a century of weathering, witnessing the evolution of agricultural civilization, handicraft development, and folk beliefs in the Cizhou region. In 2015, after being restored by the cultural relics department, it was officially opened as a thematic folk custom museum, becoming an important window for showcasing the folk culture of the southern region of Hebei Province.
The museum follows the layout of the northern four-squares courtyard, facing south, with grey bricks and tiles, exquisite wooden structures, intricately carved gate towers, auspiciously symbolic brick carvings on the eaves, and vividly lifelike roof ornaments. The courtyard is equipped with a main house, east and west side rooms, and a rear room, with clear functional divisions, reflecting the traditional concept of "hierarchy and order." The architectural details integrate decorative elements of the Cizhou Kiln glaze, highlighting regional characteristics.
The collection contains over a thousand items, covering household utensils, agricultural tools, wedding and marriage customs, folk crafts, and festival props. Key exhibits include:
As a living heritage base for the folk culture of southern Hebei, the museum systematically records the unique way of life and spiritual beliefs formed by the people of Cizhou through long-term production and life. Its exhibits authentically replicate traditional seasonal customs such as "spring prayers and autumn offerings," "making porridge on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month," and "temple fairs and market days," serving as important physical materials for studying the social structure and cultural psychology of the folk society in North China.
🌟 Tip: During the Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn Festival, the museum often holds "intangible cultural heritage performances" and "folk experience workshops," where visitors can participate in clay modeling, paper-cutting, and kiln art making, experiencing the charm of tradition.
