📍 Address: 50 meters east of Zhang Haiying Health Clinic, Longhu Town, Xinzheng City, Zhengzhou, Henan Province
🏛️ Historical Background
The Meng Clan Ancestral Hall was originally constructed during the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty (1473), built in commemoration of Mencius, the renowned philosopher and representative figure of Confucianism from the Spring and Autumn period. It stands as one of the few surviving ancestral halls in central China named after descendants of "the Second Sage" (Mencius). According to the Xinzheng County Gazetteer, the hall underwent major renovations during the Qianlong and Guangxu periods of the Qing Dynasty, making it over 500 years old. As a significant physical remnant, it offers valuable insights into the development of clan culture and the spread of Confucian thought in central Henan.
🏗️ Architectural Features
Facing south with its back to the north, the hall covers approximately 320 square meters and follows a traditional courtyard layout. The main structure consists of three sequential halls: the front hall serves as the entrance pavilion, the central hall is the main sacrificial sanctuary, and the rear hall functions as the inner sanctum or sleeping hall. Built primarily with blue bricks and gray tiles, the hall features a wooden framework, with roof ridges adorned with chiwen (dragon-like roof ornaments) and intricately painted beams and rafters that preserve the architectural style of official Ming Dynasty buildings. Two stone lions stand at the entrance, while two Qing-era steles are embedded on either side, recording the migration history of the Meng family and their contributions to education.
