The Temple of the Fire God was originally constructed during the Chenghua era of the Ming Dynasty (circa 1470 AD), making it one of the most intact Taoist temples remaining within ancient Yulin City. As a significant site of folk faith in northern Shaanxi, the temple served as a central religious venue for military and civilian communities of the Yulin Garrison during the Ming and Qing dynasties to worship the Fire God and pray for safety and prosperity, reflecting the fusion of frontier military culture and popular religious traditions.
The temple faces south with its back to the mountain, arranged symmetrically along a central axis, covering approximately 2,000 square meters. Key structures include:
Construction materials primarily use local blue bricks and gray tiles, with exquisite woodcarving and brickwork craftsmanship—especially notable in the bracket sets and ridge ornaments of the main hall.
Beyond being a physical remnant of Taoist belief, the Temple of the Fire God embodies the essence of Yulin’s frontier culture and folk traditions. Every year on the 23rd day of the sixth lunar month—the Fire God’s birthday—local residents hold processions and festive celebrations, including dragon dances and Yangge performances, a tradition that continues to this day and has been included in the Yulin City Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
