📍 Location: Eastern part of Wu'an City's urban area, outside the eastern gate of the original Wu'an ancient city, Handan City, Hebei Province
🏛️ Historical Origins
The Old Lord Temple, also known as the Guan Di Temple, was originally constructed during the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty (1522–1566). It is one of the best-preserved ancient temples in Wu'an dedicated to the worship of Guan Yu from the Ming and Qing dynasties. As a crucial node in the southward spread of Jin merchant culture, the temple bears witness to the historical convergence of commercial prosperity along the Taihang Mountain trade routes and folk religious traditions during the Ming and Qing periods. The temple was renovated during the Guangxu era of the Qing Dynasty and still retains a rich atmosphere of folk religion today.
🏯 Architectural Features
The temple complex faces south and is laid out along a central axis. The surviving main structures include the mountain gate, main hall, east and west subsidiary halls, and the ruins of the bell and drum towers. The main hall features a single-eaved hip roof with an overhanging eave, a timber frame using raised beam construction, three bays wide, with intricate dougong brackets on the front eaves and finely carved decorations. Inside, a statue of Guan Shengdi (Lord Guan) is enshrined, flanked by statues of Zhou Cang and Guan Ping. The temple walls are built of blue bricks, the roof ridges adorned with glazed ceramic chiwen ornaments, and wind chimes hang at the eaves, producing clear, lingering sounds when stirred by the breeze.
📜 Cultural Relics
🧩 Cultural Significance
Beyond serving as a vital center of folk faith in Wu'an City, the Old Lord Temple stands as tangible evidence for studying religious beliefs, architectural artistry, and cultural exchanges between Jin merchants and local communities in southern Hebei during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Every year on the 13th day of the fifth lunar month (Guan Yu’s birthday) and the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month (the “Sending-off Festival”), locals hold grand temple fairs featuring traditional opera performances, prayers for blessings, and rituals to ward off disasters—continuing age-old folk customs.
