📜 Historical Development
The Tongguan Ancient City Museum is built upon the nationally protected cultural relic site—the Tongguan Ancient City Ruins, with historical roots tracing back to 196 AD (the first year of Jian’an in the Eastern Han Dynasty), when Cao Cao established Tongguan to control access to Guanzhong and safeguard Luoyang. Over successive dynasties—including Wei, Jin, Sui, Tang, Song, and Yuan—the strategic importance of Tongguan grew steadily. By 1376 (the ninth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty), large-scale city construction was undertaken, forming a comprehensive military defense system integrating "mountains, rivers, pass, and city." In the Qing Dynasty, it maintained its reputation as the "key to the Three Qins and throat of the Four Garrisons," serving as a major frontier stronghold in northwestern China.
The museum officially opened to the public in 2018, constructed on the foundation of the original western gate barbican and adjacent section of the Ming-era city wall. Based on archaeological surveys and historical records such as the Tongguan Weizhi (Annals of the Tongguan Garrison) and Shaanxi Tongzhi (Comprehensive Records of Shaanxi), this specialized history museum reconstructs the site’s architectural layout and presents a systematic interpretation of Tongguan’s multifaceted historical roles as an ancient Chinese military geographic hub, a crucial node on the eastern segment of the Silk Road, and a vital chokepoint for Yellow River grain transport.
🏗️ Architectural Features
- Site and Layout: Located in the core western zone of the ancient city, adjacent to the surviving western stretch of the Ming city wall and the ruins of the West Gate (Jin Dou Men). The building adopts Ming-style official architecture, featuring glazed tiles, gray bricks, hip roofs, and bracket systems. Its modest scale respects the surrounding archaeological context;
- Spatial Narrative: The interior is divided into three levels (one underground, two above ground), organized along a thematic journey titled "Natural Peril · Geographical Advantage · Human Strategy," seamlessly integrating exposed site cross-sections, authentic sections of rammed earth walls, and digital sand table reconstructions;
- Heritage Integration: The west-facing gallery walls preserve a well-preserved cross-section of the Ming-era city wall (up to 12 meters thick), including layers from the Song Dynasty and traces of Qing Dynasty brickwork—rare in China as a living, on-site display of a stratified city wall.
🏺 Key Artifacts and Exhibition Content
The museum houses over 1,200 artifacts (sets), primarily excavated materials supplemented by collected historical documents. Notable items include:
- Iron Cannon from the Tongguan Garrison, Ming Dynasty (cast in the 29th year of Jiajing, bearing the inscription “Tongguan Weishi Qianhusuo”); the earliest known military weapon at Tongguan with a clear dating mark;
- Wooden Tablets Fragment from the Tang Dynasty Yellow River Grain Transport System (recovered from the ancient Jingu Channel, inscribed: “In the 23rd year of Kaiyuan, 300 shi of millet dispatched to the capital granary”)—evidence of Tongguan’s pivotal role in grain logistics during the Tang prosperity;
- Silk Scroll Map of Tongguan’s Military Layout, Qing Dynasty (National Grade II Cultural Relic)—a panoramic depiction of the garrison city, twelve connected citadels, Jingu Channel, and Qilin Mountain defensive arrangements;
- Han Dynasty Seal Impression “Linjin Cheng Yin” and Song Dynasty Boundary Stone Fragment “Tongguan Zhai”—physical proof of continuous administrative establishment at Tongguan from Han through Song periods;
- Hand-drawn Blueprints and Oral History Archives from the Anti-Japanese War Era—extending the narrative to highlight Tongguan’s modern military significance.
Permanent exhibitions are structured into four thematic sections:
- 🔹 “Supreme Strategic Position Under Heaven”: Geographic configuration and evolution of ancient passes
- 🔹 “A Thousand-Foot Iron Fortress”: Ming Dynasty garrison system and city wall construction techniques
- 🔹 “Constant Flow of Merchants and Travelers”: Eastern extension of the Silk Road and Yellow River grain trade
- 🔹 “Enduring Cultural Continuity”: Stone inscriptions of poems such as Du Fu’s Tongguan Li and Wang Shizhen’s Passing Through Tongguan, alongside intangible cultural heritage displays of local opera (Tongguan Old Tune)
🌟 Cultural Value and Academic Significance
- It is the first specialized museum in China centered on the military geography of mountain passes, filling a critical gap in the Great Wall defense system by establishing a dedicated model for "pass-city" museums;
- The museum’s collection, combined with the on-site ruins, forms a four-layered evidentiary chain—above-ground structures, subterranean remains, written records, and oral histories—providing irreplaceable primary data for research into ancient border defense systems, urban history along the Yellow River, and military engineering technology;
- Included in the State Administration of Cultural Heritage’s “14th Five-Year Plan” Special Program for Major Site Conservation and Utilization, it collaborates with Hangu Pass and Dasaiguan to form a research axis on pass civilization across the Shaanxi–Henan–Shanxi tri-border region;
- Its exhibition practices have advanced the concept of "museumification of archaeological sites", becoming a benchmark example for revitalizing cultural heritage in the Loess Plateau region.
