📜 Historical Background
The Jianshu City Eastern Gate is an important relic of the military defense system from the Warring States period to the Han Dynasty, originally serving as the main entrance to the eastern side of the ancient city of Jianshu. According to the "Waterway Classic" and local chronicles, the city was built during the Warring States period and was one of the key northern border defense towns of the State of Zhao. It was a crucial site for training, garrisoning, and defending the borders. The Eastern Gate, as part of the core defense structure of the ancient city, witnessed the evolution of the military strategic patterns from the Spring and Autumn period to the Warring States period to the inter-Han period.
🏛️ Architecture and Cultural Relics
- Gate Structure: The existing foundation of the Eastern Gate presents an arched opening, constructed with rammed earth and blue bricks, with a remaining height of about 3.5 meters and a width of about 4.2 meters. Clear traces of the rammed layers are visible inside the gate passage.
- Building Materials: Utilizing the typical "sand-rammed construction method" of the late Warring States period, some sections of the walls are embedded with Han Dynasty pottery fragments, tiles, and arrowheads.
- Relic Characteristics: The remnants of the city walls on both sides of the gate show three layers of rammed earth, reflecting the historical track of multiple renovations and reinforcement.
- Excavated Cultural Relics: During the archaeological excavations in the 1980s, artifacts such as the "Daquan Fifty" coin mold, fragments of iron weapons, and pottery with the character "Jianshu" were unearthed, confirming its military function.
